Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

Absence makes the heart grow fonder is an English proverb that means being away from someone or something makes you love him, her or it more. In contrast, the proverb out of sight, out of mind means that when you are away from someone or something, you forget about him, her or it. Usually these two sayings are used when talking about separations from loved ones. However, one could also use these phrases when talking about leaving your homeland and starting a new life in a foreign country, a topic that is relevant to many learners of ESL. For those of you who have left your places of birth, how do you feel? Does being away from your homeland make you love it more (i.e. does absence make the heart grow fonder?)?
